Oilfield Equipment and Services

This sector of the oil and gas industry contains companies that don’t produce crude oil – they don’t own wells but instead provide equipment, services, expertise and the skills required for oil production. Companies might rent rigs or provide services such as manufacturing, repairing and maintaining oil extraction equipment.

Services might include seismic testing, which is how they map the structure under the earth’s surface; transport services to move rigs; and providing horizontal drilling services.

Setting Up a New Rig

Setting up a new rig has many of the same hazards as drilling. However, setting up a rig has some of its own unique hazards. Rigging up and rigging down is moving a rig from one site to another. The riggers construct certain parts of the equipment and put the rig together.

The basic steps are:

  • Unload the equipment near the drilling location. Workers use cranes and welders to unload and start setting up the rig.
  • Set up the rigging floor and the derrick. Workers could be hit by dropped tools and swinging equipment.
  • Install guardrails, handrails, stairs, ladders and walkways. Workers could easily slip and fall during this phase as safety features such as guardrails are not yet installed.
  • Install the power system. While installing the power required to operate the equipment on the rig, workers could run into hazards such as chemical hazards and pinch points.
  • Set up the circulating system. Workers install the pumps and mud tanks. Hazards include pinch points, hammer strikes, and other injuries caused by hand tools.
  • Install the auxiliary equipment. Workers position the pipe racks and other equipment. Hazards include crush injuries, blows and crush injuries from pipes, and injuries from using hand tools.

Companies, Their Services, and Personal Protective Equipment Required

Companies that provide oilfield equipment and services include Baker Hughes, Halliburton, National Oilwell Varco, Phillips 66, ConocoPhillips, and Patterson-UTI Drilling. The services provided depend on the company. The personal protective equipment required depends on the services and might include gloves that protect against chemicals, impacts, and abrasions, fire-resistant clothing, high-visibility clothing, hard hats, and face and eye protection.
