Flame-Resistant (FR) Clothes and Triple-Vented FR-Rated Clothing

When you work in an industry with a high risk of fire hazards, you and your workers should wear flame-resistant clothing. The FR clothing we carry at Abolox protects workers from heat, arc flash hazards, hot spatter, flash fires, and other heat and fire hazards. Fire-resistant clothing has different ratings for different levels of protection. Always be sure to choose fire-resistant clothing with a rating that protects you from the type of fire and heat hazards in your industry.

Recognized Testing Standards

There are more than two recognized testing standards, but the two that are the most common are the ASTM International and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It is best to choose FR clothing rated by one or both of these associations. Abolox carries fire-resistant clothing rated by both.

ASTM International

ASTM International has been defining and setting safety standards since 1898 to improve workers’ lives. The company is committed to global public health and safety, and consumer confidence. They are a voluntary standards development organization that publishes consensus standards for products, materials and other items, including fire-resistant clothing.

The ratings you might need, depending on your manufacturing processes, include the following:

  • ASTM D-6413: Takes mere seconds to self-extinguish.
  • ASTM F1506: The garment’s ability not to drip, burn or melt for more than two seconds.
  • ASTM F1891: ARC-rated raingear equal to or greater than 5.0 cal/cm2.
  • ASTM F1930: How much thermal protection a garment has.
  • ASTM F2733: Amount of protection raingear has against flash fires with an average burn area of 40 percent or less in a 3-second flash fire.

National Fire Protection Association

Established in 1986, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides standards for equipment related to electrical and fire hazards and other similar hazards. They test fire-resistant clothing pursuant to the following standards:

  • NFPA 2112: Rating for garments that protect workers from flash fires.
  • NFPA 70E: ARC Rating for garments used to protect workers in substation areas.

The NFPA 70E has five hazard risk categories that range from zero to 4. If your fire-resistant PPE has a rating of zero, there is no risk that it will melt. Level 4 means that there is an “extreme risk” of melting materials.

Triple-Vented Fire-Resistant Clothing

Some of the fire-resistant clothing we carry at Abolox is triple-vented and stands up to ASTM’s 1930 burn test. MCR Fire Resistant clothing has been shown to outperform non-vented clothing by 43 percent.

Abolox carries MCR’s patented triple-vent fire-resistant clothing, which protects workers against arc flash and flash fire hazards. The vented design helps to keep workers cooler and diverts most of the gas away from your breathing zone.

Features include:

  • Two-way fire-resistant zipper front.
  • Chest pockets with closing zippers.
